Maui and Molokai volunteers in Alaska
Four local Red Cross volunteers from Maui, Molokai and Oahu have deployed to help with the Red Cross response to the remnants of Typhoon Merbok that impacted Alaska.
All volunteers are assisting by traveling to affected areas and were scheduled to report to Anchorage on Monday for a 14-day deployment, the American Red Cross of Hawaii said in a news release.
The volunteers will join disaster workers already on-site as feeding associates, emergency supply distributors and damage assessors.
The conditions have caused flooding in communities along Alaska’s western shore with surge waters as high as 15 feet and winds peaking at 80 miles per hour.
Freezing temperatures are expected in the coming weeks. Sheltering safely and supply delivery are a major concern.
