County’s unemployment rate in October slightly up
Maui County’s unemployment rate in October was up slightly at 3.9 percent as compared to September, when the rate was at 3.7 percent, according to the state Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism on Thursday.
However, the county’s nonseasonally adjusted rate for October was much lower than the unemployment rate in October 2021, when it was 6.2 percent.
On Maui island in October, the unemployment rate was 3.8 percent, up slightly from September at 3.7 percent but down significantly from October 2021 when it was 6.1 percent.
On Molokai, the unemployment rate in October was 8.4 percent, up from 7.3 percent in September but down from 10 percent in October 2021.
Lanai’s unemployment rate for October was the lowest in the state at 1.7 percent, down from 1.8 percent in September and down from 6.2 percent in October 2021.
Overall, the state’s nonseasonally adjusted unemployment rate for October was 3.5 percent, slightly up from 3.4 percent in September and down from 5.1 percent in October 2021.
Among Hawaii’s total labor force in October, 654,050 were employed and 22,850 were unemployed, an improvement over October 2021 when 640,950 people were employed and 31,450 were not.
Nationally, the U.S. saw a 3.4 percent unemployment rate in October, up from 3.3 percent in September and down from 4.3 percent in October 2021.
