Waves of 12 to 16 feet could hit north-facing shores of Maui and Molokai as a northwest swell transitions to a more northerly direction, according to the National Weather Service.

A high surf advisory is in effect through 6 a.m. today.

The weather service warned of moderate impacts, including strong breaking waves and strong currents, which will make swimming dangerous.
