Rotary club to host nonprofit founder

Monica Marrow will be the guest speaker at the Rotary Club if Kahului’s virtual meeting from noon to 1 p.m. on Monday.

Marrow is the founder of What Makes You Feel Beautiful, a nonprofit that aims to empower girls and women. She also created the FLY First Love Yourself program, which offers workshops, classes, support groups and mentoring to girls ages 13-17.

T’ai chi ch’uan course offered

A 10-week beginner t’ai chi ch’uan course will be offered from 5 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays beginning June 6 at the Kula Dojo.

The course will be taught by certified instructors Jan Osterneck and John Rivera. T’ai chi ch’uan is known to improve concentration, strengthen the mind/body connection and enhance health and well-being.

Cafe to host ‘Books & Brews’

Vida by Sip Me Maui will host a “Books & Brews” event from 1 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday at the Makawao cafe.

Monk seals topic of free seminar

Wildlife biologist Ashley Hechavarria will present a talk titled “Conservation of the Hawaiian Monk Seal: How Efforts are Saving a Species” during a free virtual seminar at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Hechavarria will talk about the natural history of monk seals, conservation efforts and the success story of male RL72.

The talk is part of the Maui Nui Marine Resource Council’s Know Your Ocean Speaker Series.

Haleakala service trip set for June 10-12

The Friends of Haleakala National Park is seeking enthusiastic and fit volunteers for a strenuous three-night backpacking service trip into the park’s wilderness areas June 10-12.

Volunteers will tent camp in the Holua Wilderness Area. They will remove invasive plant species to protect native plants and nene habitat, according to a news release from the nonprofit.

Participants must be physically capable of being in the outdoors and at higher elevations, walking on uneven terrain up to five miles each shift and carrying a backpack with a sleeping bag and other items.

Safety equipment and tools will be provided by Haleakala National Park.

MHLA awards 24 scholarships

The Maui Hotel & Lodging Association has awarded a total of $61,500 in scholarships to 24 local students.

Scholarships were awarded through the UH-Maui College hospitality and culinary arts programs, the Academy of Hospitality and Tourism program and the Maui Hotel & Lodging Association Member Program.

The six recipients from the UH-Maui College hospitality and culinary programs are Tricha Arquero, McKenna Lickle, Malorie Murakami, John Cudal, Zena Garcia and Rena Leeber.

Three students were awarded scholarships through the Academy of Hospitality and Tourism program, which supports students who have chosen to pursue a career path in Hawaii’s visitor industry. The recipients are Triston Lewis, Deseree Soriano and Deanne Suehisa.

Fifteen scholarships were awarded through the Maui Hotel & Lodging Association Member Program. The recipients are Joanna Marie Acosta, Tiana Agres, Taylor Barroga, Deyna Buck, Juliana Beatrix Cruz, Kami Echiverri, Kailani Ibanez, Mary-Elsie Koka, Haylee Lundberg, Danica Mae Palacio, Jarred Peros, Gabriella Pinheiro, D’Marco Rabang, Kilinaheikealaula Robinson and Dylan Noah Sagon.

Students receive Asa Ellison scholarships

The Japanese Cultural Society of Maui recently awarded the Asa Ellison Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,500 to Kaitlin Kitigawa of King Kekaulike High School for her academic record, community service and efforts to perpetuate the Japanese culture and language.

The organization also awarded $1,000 scholarships to Jaimee Yokoyama of King Kekaulike High School and Taylie Teraoka of Baldwin High School. Both students were selected for their record of involvement in promoting and perpetuating the Japanese culture and language.

10 students receive Jerman scholarship

Ten Maui County high school seniors have been awarded $1,000 each by the Josh and Souk Jerman Foundation Scholarship program.

The recipients are Taylor Aloy of Kamehameha Schools Maui, Kathleen Baniqued of Lahainaluna High School, Niko Banto of Maui Preparatory Academy, Taliah Cabatu of Maui High School, Helena Colletta of Seabury Hall, Mansa Devaki of Seabury Hall, Olapaholunape Duvachelle of Molokai High School, Jacob Garcia of Kamehameha Schools Maui, Kaitlin Kitagawa of King Kekaulike High School and Yuna Lee of Maui Preparatory Academy.

Now in its 20th consecutive year, the Josh and Souk Jerman Foundation Scholarship program has awarded more than $69,000 in scholarships to students who have displayed a passion for returning to Maui County after college to contribute to the community, according to a news release.
