The Maui High School Marching Band captured first place in the 4A Division at the Western Band Association Conquistador Classic marching band competition in Chico, Calif. on Saturday.
The band performed their show entitled “The Power of One,” led by drum majors Bryanne Mangabat, a senior, along with sophomores Andrea Valencia and Rushielle Cachero. The band scored the highest out of three schools in the 4A Division (groups with 91-125 performers), taking high honors in overall effect, music, visual and color guard. They also took second place in percussion.
The Saber Marching Band is made up of 99 students, 40 of whom are new to the marching band.
For 20 seniors, this was their final marching performance as a Saber. The students started official practices in June for three days a week, totaling nine to 12 hours a week.
This year’s band had no prior competitive marching band experience, but Director Kerry Wasano said they persevered despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and the wildfires.
He also thanked the community and the Maui High Band Booster Club.
