Maui firefighters rescued three teenage girls who got stranded on a rock in a raging Iao Stream on Sunday.

With the stream quickly rising, the swiftwater rescue happened at about 2:54 p.m. Sunday. According to the fire department, a rescue helicopter lowered a firefighter to help get the three girls from Maui to safety.

No injuries were reported during the rescue mauka of Mokuhau Park. The operation was completed by 4 p.m.

During the rainy winter season, flash floods can occur quickly, especially when there are clouds in the mountain areas of Maui.
