A man died after losing his footing and falling 60 feet while hiking near a waterfall in East Maui on Saturday.

The hiker has been identified as Karl Newman, 49, of Waikapu. According to Maui police, Newman was with acquaintances when he fell.

Police said that due to the location and height of the waterfall, which was estimated to be 60 feet, Newman needed to be extracted by a helicopter.

The incident happened near mile marker 6.75 on the Hana Highway. Authorities received the call at 12:43 p.m. Saturday.

Police said there were no signs of foul play, and an autopsy has been scheduled.
