Maui Raceway Park features local pride, automotive power
Engines roared and smoke filled the air while drifting into the stands with the wind. Red, yellow, green, and the lineup launched down the strip, some pushing past 200 mph.
This year’s Memorial Day weekend marked the 26th year of racing at Maui Raceway Park.
Maui’s tight-knit community shows up year after year to celebrate the thrill and tradition that Raceway Park brings. Trucks line the track, food vendors post up on the grassy field and tents and coolers mark the spots where families and friends gather to spend the day together.
More than 2,000 guests come out to enjoy the action — drawn in by the speed, sound and a sense of ‘ohana. From specialty drag cars to local racers bringing out their personal builds — vehicles used solely for events like this — each driver adds to the electricity in the air.
There were many winners throughout the day, while standout performances included Jamie Texeira clocking a six-second run at 200 mph, and Corey Yamashita finishing in 6.96 seconds at 191 mph. Incredible accomplishments that had the crowd on their feet — especially the kids, who lined the fence during the wind-down laps, eagerly begging drivers to rev their engines. The ones who obliged earned wide-eyed smiles and cheers, fueling the stoke even more.
For many, Maui Raceway Park is more than just a place to race. The nonprofit organization has a group of nine individuals on its board of directors, dedicated to promoting safe driving by offering a controlled environment on the strip instead of the streets.
Each season runs from February through November, encouraging the community to come together in a positive, exhilarating way.
At the races, kids often soak in the high-energy atmosphere while adults enjoy picking their favorites, guessing the winners and estimating the speeds as they connect with neighbors and share in the thrill of competition.
With Maui Raceway Park located between Kihei and Kahului being the only racetrack on the island, it’s become a central hub for automotive enthusiasts and families alike.
As the racetrack continues to grow, more drivers, fans and sponsors are taking part, and each event promises more to look forward to as races present a fast-paced event showcasing island pride and local connections.
Race days are always special on the Valley Isle, with the next event set for July 19. For more, go to www.mrp.org.
