Nominations, candidates sought for open judge’s position

Applications are being accepted for a District Court judge in Maui County.

The vacancy was created after District Judge Blaine Kobayashi retired on July 1 after serving as a district court judge since October 2010.

The Judicial Selection Commission is accepting applications and nominations to fill the vacancy. The appointment is for six years, and the position pays $225,828 annually.

Requirements include U.S. citizenship, Hawaii residency and a license to practice law by Hawaiʻi Supreme Court. The appointee must have practiced law for no less than five years and reside in Maui County.

Full-time judges receive employer contributions to premiums for enrollment in the state-sponsored medical, drug, vision and dental plans, a free life insurance policy, state retirement benefits, a deferred compensation supplemental retirement savings plan, 13 paid holidays annually (14 days during election years), and 21 vacation and 21 sick leave days per year. Judges also will be retired upon turning 70 years old.

The commission is also inviting people to nominate qualified individuals for the position.

Nominations can be mailed to the address below with the nominee’s full name and mailing address as soon as possible and no later than the Aug. 25 nomination deadline.
