Fred Spanjaard to share behind-the-scenes experience from historic 1985 Live Aid concert
Maui resident Fred Spanjaard will be the guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Kahului meeting from noon-1 p.m. Aug. 18.
According to the club, Spanjaard, an event producer and promoter, will offer a behind-the-scenes look at the historic 1985 Live Aid Concert, which raised more than $120 million in famine relief for Ethiopia and was watched by three-fourths of the world’s population.
The event will take place at Tante’s Island Cuisine at the Maui Seaside Hotel. Guests and community members are invited.
As a producer for Live Aid, Spanjaard had a front-row seat to the event that brought together some of the biggest names in rock ‘n’ roll and turned music into a force for global change. The talk will feature historical context, never-before-heard backstage stories and personal photos from the Philadelphia show.
With a career spanning more than 30 years, Spanjaard has produced concerts, festivals and educational events for audiences ranging from small groups to hundreds of millions. Since moving to Maui 24 years ago, he has continued his passion for creating events that entertain, educate and inspire communities to take action.
Live Aid was a two-venue benefit concert and music-based fundraising initiative on July 13, 1985. The event was organised by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise funds to ease a yearslong famine in Ethiopia.
