Kulanihakoi High School looking to fill open coaching positions

Kulanihakoi High School in Kihei is in need of two coaches this fall — one to lead the school’s boys and girls air riflery teams and another to guide its cheerleading squad.

The school’s athletic director, Michael Watson, said that while the competitions are still a little ways out, he is hoping to get two new coaches in place as soon as possible.

For the boys and girls air riflery coach, Watson said Kulanihakoi hopes to find someone with experience in shooting sports, and it doesn’t necessarily have to be with air rifles.

“If they have experience in air riflery, that would be positive, but if they’re familiar with safety procedures, if they’ve coached in some way or have participated in shooting sports, then that would be a big help,” Watson said.

For the cheer team, Watson said they plan to start slow with a focus on cheer-based tumbling and gymnastics before moving into more competition-based practices.

Watson said that both of the head coaching positions are paid, and the school can hire a coach who is outside the Department of Education, so it doesn’t have to be someone already affiliated with the school or an existing Department of Education employee.

Watson said the size of the air riflery team could warrant a paid position for an assistant, and he added that there are volunteer opportunities for pretty much all of the sports at the school.

For the fall, Kulanihakoi fields teams in volleyball, cheer, cross country, football and air riflery.

Watson said there could be some flexibility in terms of scheduling, but coaches will need to commit to practices and competitions, with most teams practicing about five days a week.

Anyone interested in knowing more about the open coaching positions can email Watson at michael.watson@k12.hi.us or call (808) 727-6810.

Starting at $4.62/week.
