Kamehameha Maui football gets first-round bye in state playoffs

Kamehameha Maui won its last regular season Maui Interscholastic League season football game 36-18 over King Kekaulike on Friday.

After winning last year’s state tournament, the defending champions went undefeated in MIL Division II play this year. The Warriors have earned a bye in the first round and will be among the four teams in the semi-finals scheduled on Nov. 22.

The two winners will advance to the state championship game on Nov. 28 at Mililani Field.

“We have a long period before the first game on Nov. 22,” Kamehameha Maui coach Ulima Afoa said.

Afoa said the waiting period will give his players time to heal, and he tentatively plans to have the team resume practice a week before the Nov. 22 game.

The Warriors have scored an average of 37.2 points on offense per game in the 2025 season while holding their opponents to 12.8 points.

Kamehameha Maui has relied upon its leading scorers on offense including sophomore quarterback Kekoa Keau-Davis and senior running back Zedekaiah Campbell, who have posted big numbers throughout the 2025 season.

Afoa also praised the Warriors defense and defensive coordinator David Carino for their work that led to shutouts against Maui High and Lahainaluna.

Afoa also praised the junior varsity staff for preparing players to make a smooth transition to varsity, including Keau-Davis, who was playing as the junior varsity quarterback as a freshman in 2024.

“Our JV program has been pretty successful,” Afoa said. “They’re on the same page as us, which is important.”

Afoa said in the 2024 season and playoffs, his team relied on three quarterbacks because of player injuries, but this year their primary quarterback is Keau-Davis.

He said his team is also fortunate to have three running backs including Nakoa Pau doing a “nice job.”

Afoa, who became head coach in 2016, said he’s grateful also for the help from his assistant coaches and staff who have contributed to a winning season.

“It’s people deciding to be a part of building into the vision,” he said.

Starting at $4.62/week.
