Kamehameha Maui football is bound for state playoffs
Kamehameha Maui has locked up its spot in the state football playoffs, which begin Nov. 15, by going undefeated so far this season in Maui Interscholastic League play.
The Warriors, who will face King Kekaulike this weekend, showed a balanced offense and tough defense in their 27-7 win over Lahainaluna Oct. 17 at Kamehameha Schools Maui.
Kamehameha scored in each quarter, while the Lunas were held scoreless until the third. The Warriors averaged 5.1 yards per carry, compared to 3.0 yards per carry for Lahainaluna.
Sophomore quarterback Kekoa Keau-Davis passed for 138 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Tai Buenconsejo returned a kickoff 81 yards for a score, and sophomore Xander Pagan ran for 93 yards and a touchdown.
Junior Frank Abreu caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Keau-Davis in the fourth quarter.
For Lahainaluna, sophomore quarterback Lika Rosenthal threw for 68 yards, including a 30-yard touchdown pass to Moku Basques in the third quarter.
Kamehameha Maui, unbeaten in MIL Division II play, ranked fifth statewide in defensive team scoring with 40.5 points in league play, followed by Division II rival King Kekaulike in 19th place with 17 points, according to the ScoringLive Pizza Hut Scoreboard.
This season, Kamehameha has scored 266 points while holding opponents to 63.
Last year, Kamehameha defeated Kaiser 37-14 to capture the Division II state football championship — the first in school history.
“It’s a great feeling to achieve what you set out to achieve, more so for it being the first one for this campus,” said coach Ulima Afoa.
