The Hawaii-based nonprofit Aloha Amplified is accepting online submissions for the Lahaina Time Capsule, which is to be opened on Aug. 8, 2043.

According to the nonprofit, the time capsule project is meant to preserve messages, photos and reflections, and the opening will coincide with the 20th anniversary of the 2023 wildfire that killed more than 100 people and destroyed much of the town.

“This project offers a meaningful way for both those in Lahaina, throughout Hawaii and around the world who carry Lahaina in their hearts to express what this place means to them,” said Linn Nishikawa, board president of Aloha Amplified. “It’s an opportunity to speak to the future — to remind generations to come of the strength, aloha and resilience that define this community.”

The nonprofit is inviting participants to share their submissions at LightsforLahaina.org/timecapsule. While a large number of different items are being accepted, items of memorabilia will not be included in the capsule. For a full list of the different items that can be included, go to the nonprofit’s website.

The project was introduced Sept. 6 during the Lights for Lahaina & Light March at Maria Lanakila Catholic Church, where attendees were invited to handwrite letters and share messages for Lahaina’s future.

The submissions will be digitized and preserved in the capsule. The capsule then will be buried in January on the Maria Lanakila Catholic Church grounds.

Starting at $4.62/week.
