More flights to Maui canceled as end to shutdown appears near
Despite the announced deal in the U.S. Senate to end the government shutdown, the number of canceled commercial flights on Maui continued to grow over the weekend.
According to FlightAware.com, six flights by Hawaiian Airlines from Sunday through Tuesday were canceled. Each flight had 134 passenger seats.
The Department of Transportation had ordered a reduction in flights at 40 high-volume airports starting last week to address safety concerns caused by staffing shortages among air traffic controllers during the federal shutdown.
The reduction in flights began last week as the federal government sought to cut flights by 10% by this coming Friday. The canceled flights to Maui since last Friday represent a total seating capacity of more than 1,400.
Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy has described the reductions as “proactive” measures to alleviate pressure on controllers who are working without pay during the federal shutdown.
On Monday, U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson urged lawmakers to start returning to Washington “right now” given the travel delays, and he said he would issue an official notice for the House’s return once the Senate passed the legislation.
