A 47-year-old man was killed in a rollover wreck Thursday in Makena.

According to Maui police, Joseph Donaldson of League City, Texas, was driving a 2024 BMW X5 south on Makena Road about a mile south of Oneloa Beach South Road when he crossed over the center line and veered off the left side of the road.

Police reported that the vehicle collided with a number of rocks on the left shoulder before crossing back over the road and hitting more rocks on the right shoulder.

The BMW then flipped over and came to a rest back in the road on its roof. During the collision, Donaldson was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.

A 46-year-old woman from Texas was a passenger in the car at the time of the wreck. She was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.

Police believe speed played a role in the wreck. The investigation is ongoing.
