Streets near Lahaina Harbor to reopen for daytime access starting Dec. 15

Map courtesy Maui County

Some county streets near the Lahaina Small Boat Harbor will reopen for daytime public access starting Dec. 15, the Maui County Office of Recovery announced.

The streets have been closed for repairs since the August 2023 wildfires. Beginning Dec. 15, access will be allowed from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Motorists are being asked to follow new signage and parking rules in the area.

The town’s electrical system is still being restored and streetlights have not yet been replaced, so the area will close nightly at 6 p.m. until infrastructure work is completed.

Public access, with no parking allowed, will resume from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Canal, Wharf and Hotel streets.

Parking near Lahaina harbor will be managed by Park Maui in coordination with the Office of Recovery. Park Maui ambassadors will open intersection barricades during the daytime hours at Front and Dickenson streets, Prison and Luakini streets, and Front and Shaw streets.

Effective Dec. 15, there will be free, three-hour parking in two county lots off 500 Front St. (corner of Shaw and Front streets) and 116 Prison St. (corner of Prison and Front streets).

Street parking along Front Street will remain prohibited.

Fifteen-minute active loading and unloading zones will be along Wharf Street.

Pedestrian and ADA-compliant pathways lead to the loading dock and ferry terminal.

Accessible amenities include select public sidewalks, the fueling station, loading dock and ferry terminal at Lahaina Small Boat Harbor; harbor-front trellis, benches and planting area; and state public restrooms at the Lahaina Small Boat Harbor.

Closed sidewalks will be barricaded and marked.

No Lahaina businesses or historic sites, including Banyan Tree Park, are currently open to the public due to ongoing repairs.
