Teen dies from injuries sustained in Haleakala Highway crash

Maui police said Friday that a 19-year-old man who was critically injured in a head-on crash on Haleakala Highway has died.

Mason Pang of Makawao died Thursday at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

According to information previously released by police, Pang was driving a 1998 Toyota Tacoma east on the highway at about 12:14 a.m. Wednesday when the driver of a 2020 Honda Ridgeline made a left turn from Old Haleakala Highway onto Haleakala Highway and collided head-on with the Tacoma.

Police continue to search for the Honda’s driver, who fled the scene on foot. He has been identified as Kaleo Kubo, 31, who is described as 5 feet 3 inches tall and 155 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. Police said he is known to frequent Central Maui.

A 32-year-old woman from Wailuku who was a passenger in the Honda also suffered multiple injuries and was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Police said Pang was wearing his seat belt at the time of the collision. The passenger in the Honda was not. Air bags deployed in both vehicles.

The crash remains under investigation.

Maui County has experienced 18 traffic-related fatalities in 2025, which is four more than at the same time last year.
