Man rescued with help of smartwatch
Maui County rescuers were able to locate a paddler in distress who had been separated from his canoe on Tuesday after accessing location information from the man’s smartwatch.
County rescue officials said the paddler was separated from his canoe several miles offshore in waters off the Paia and Kahului area. The call for help was made at about 4:17 p.m. Tuesday.
County ocean rescuers conducted a search by jet skis and aboard their Air 1 helicopter, and the canoe was found about two miles offshore.
Officials said that by using location information from the paddler’s smartwatch, they were able to find him about two miles offshore of the Spreckelsville area. He had used a personal flotation device to help him stay afloat.
Officials said the man was airlifted to safety and required no medical attention.
