For the first time in the event’s history, registration for the full marathon at the 56th annual Maui Marathon has closed after reaching its participation limit.
The race scheduled for April 26 in Kaanapali hit capacity last week, according to race organizers. They said the decision to close registration is intended to prioritize runner safety and preserve the integrity of the event.
The registration cutoff applies only to the full marathon. Registration remains open for the half marathon, 10K and 5K races at mauimarathon.com.
“We have always prioritized runner safety and the overall quality of the event,” said Jeremiah Savage, co-race director. “Growth must occur in a measured and responsible way, with careful consideration for safety and for the West Maui community that graciously hosts this race each year.”
As of Jan. 7, full marathon participation had already exceeded last year’s total, and organizers expect more than 2,500 combined entries across all of the races.
In preparation for the Maui Marathon, organizers say they have been working with the Maui Police Department and the Hawaii State Department of Transportation to coordinate race-day safety and route logistics.
“Our goal is to protect the runner experience while maintaining the high safety standards our participants and community expect,” Savage said.
