MPD: Police shoot suspect who fired on officers

Maui police say that officers responding to a call Thursday night returned fire and shot a man after he fired a gun at police.

According to information released by the Maui Police Department, dispatch received a call at 7:27 p.m. Thursday about a potential terroristic threatening incident involving a man armed with a gun in an open field off Kuikahi Drive in Wailuku.

Police said patrol officers responded to the area and found the man. He refused to follow orders from the officers and opened fire on them. Police then returned fire and shot the man.

The extent of the man’s injuries was not clear Friday. Police said no other injuries were reported.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave as standard procedure.

The incident remains under investigation.
