The Upcountry Maui Rotary Club has announced its December Students of the Month, recognizing two seniors for their academic achievements, leadership and service.
Club President Mary Albitz presented the awards to Tevyn Apo, a senior at Kamehameha Schools Maui, and Johnneece Kilohilani “Kilohi” Moniz-Kekumu, a senior at King Kekaulike High School, during a recent ceremony.
According to the Rotary Club, Apo has excelled as a top contributor to the school’s football program and as one of the Maui Interscholastic League’s leading sprinters. He also serves as vice president of the Associated Students of Kamehameha Schools.
When an injury ended his football season, Apo continued to give his school and community a boost by supporting his teammates from the sidelines, assisting with voter registration efforts at Aha Kukalahale and guiding ninth-grade orientations while mentoring younger athletes.
Moniz-Kekumu is enrolled in dual-credit and college-level courses and maintains high academic standards while actively contributing to her school and community. She has volunteered with Becca’s Closet, supported the UA NEXT All-America Camp Series, and took a lead role in planning and coordinating a leadership training event for elementary students within the Kekaulike complex.
Moniz-Kekumu plans to attend Whitworth University, where she will major in political science and pre-law and pursue a career focused on advocacy and community impact.
