Hawaiian Electric continues restoring power with outages on Maui, Molokai and Lanai

Hawaiian Electric is working to restore power to customers affected by a powerful storm.

The company reported Monday morning that power had been restored to 80% of customers who lost service on Sunday.

On Maui, crews are repairing a broken pole and downed lines in the Piiholo area of Upcountry to restore service to about 230 customers. Crews also are responding to other isolated outages.

About 1,150 customers on Lanai were restored overnight after a tree branch contacted power lines.

On Molokai, about 300 customers in Kaluakoi had service restored after Hawaiian Electric repaired a damaged utility pole.

Wind gusts of 35 mph and higher have been recorded in parts of Maui County and Hawaii Island, hampering restoration efforts.

Crews must suspend work when conditions become unsafe, including when gusts reach 30 mph or higher, which can make it dangerous to raise the hydraulic boom of a utility bucket truck.

Crews also continue working to restore power to about 1,330 customers in various areas across Oahu.

With a National Weather Service high wind advisory remaining in effect until 6 p.m. Monday, the company is urging customers to stay prepared for potential extended power outages.

Starting at $4.62/week.
