From Friday to Monday morning, the Maui County Department of Fire and Public Safety responded to at least 58 storm-related calls, including 32 for flooding emergencies, five for sparking power lines, five for vehicles stranded due to downed trees, six for boats that had parted their moorings and 10 swift-water rescues in which 27 people were saved.

The department said many of the people were rescued from vehicles that had been driven into flood waters and their occupants became stranded in the fast-moving waters.

Although the storm has passed, some roads remain impassable or unsafe to drive. The Hana Highway from Twin Falls to Hana town is also open only to essential workers and local traffic. Also, the road fronting 2463 South Kihei Road has been closed to traffic in all directions.

First responders are urging people not to enter storm-damaged areas, and not to drive, walk or use other vehicles to enter coned-off or taped-off areas, as the risk of injury remains.

People should also avoid walking through floodwaters, as they could contain unseen hazards, such as missing utility or manhole covers, damaged paved and unpaved surfaces, flood debris, hazardous chemicals, dangerous bacteria and human and animal waste.

Brown ocean water should be avoided as well, as it may contain chemicals, high levels of bacteria, human and animal waste, and conceal hidden hazards.

Starting at $4.62/week.
