One injured, two displaced in Haiku house fire

A 45-year-old man suffered burn injuries and two people were displaced by a fire Friday night at a home in the 1300 block of Kaupakalua Road in Haiku, according to the Maui Fire Department. The fire was reported at 10:36 p.m. Firefighters arrived to find a bedroom burning inside the single-story, single-family residence. Crews deployed hoses, entered the home and extinguished the flames after confirming that all occupants had evacuated. The fire was confined to the bedroom where it began. Entangled propeller delays Lanai ferry Saturday night

Crews from the Maui County Department of Fire and Public Safety responded Saturday evening to an Expeditions Lanai Ferry that was adrift in the Auau Channel after debris became entangled in the boat’s propeller. The department received the call at 6:44 p.m. and sent personnel aboard Rescue Boat 10 to assist the ferry between Maui and Lanai. By the time they reached the vessel, its crew had freed the debris from the propeller without assistance. Rescue Boat 10 escorted the ferry to Maalaea Harbor without further incident. The response concluded at 8:45 p.m.

Injured hiker airlifted from Olivine Pools trail

Maui firefighters airlifted an injured hiker from the Olivine Pools trail Sunday afternoon. The Maui Fire Department received the call at 4:54 p.m. and sent rescue personnel aboard the department’s Air 1 helicopter. The 43-year-old woman had suffered an ankle injury in a fall and was unable to walk out, according to the department. Rescuers lifted the woman aboard the helicopter and flew her from the trail to a nearby roadway, where she was transferred to emergency medical personnel for transportation. The rescue concluded at 6:19 p.m.

Mokulele awarded $19.4 million contract for Lanai air service

Mokulele Airlines has been awarded a four-year, $19.4 million federal contract to continue providing scheduled air service between Lanai, Honolulu and Kahului. Mokulele’s parent company, Surf Air Mobility, announced the contract in a Monday news release. The company said the Essential Air Service contract from the U.S. Department of Transportation runs through August 2030. Under the contract, Mokulele will operate 63 round trips, or 126 flights, each week. The schedule includes 42 weekly round trips between Lanai and Honolulu and 21 between Lanai and Kahului.
