Utility work to affect traffic in Kihei

South Kihei Road traffic will be affected Aug. 6-8 while Hawaiian Electric crews install two utility poles and restring power lines damaged during March's Kona low storms. The work will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily along South Kihei Road between Alanui Ke Ali‘i Road and Keonekai Street. A roving lane shift will be in effect, and the bike lane, shoulder and sidewalk in the work area will be closed. Flaggers will direct traffic, pedestrians and cyclists through the area. DLNR urges public to avoid waters near humpback whale remains off Molokai

State officials are urging residents and visitors to stay out of the water along Molokai’s south shore near the remains of a humpback whale that died July 10. According to the Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Aquatic Resources, the whale died after spending more than two months in a reef pocket off the island with her calf. The calf has since left the area and has not been seen, but tides are carrying the whale’s remains through areas used by fishers and commercial tour operators. County launches human resources modernization initiative

Maui County has launched a comprehensive initiative to modernize human resources across county departments, the Maui County Department of Management announced Friday. Called Align HR, the initiative is meant to review and update human resources administrative rules, policies and procedures while developing a long-term strategy to strengthen and support the county's workforce.
