Firefighters rescue hiker, paddleboarder

Maui County firefighters and Ocean Safety personnel rescued a hiker in Kipahulu and a stand-up paddleboarder off North Kihei over the weekend. On Friday, multiple units responded at 3:33 p.m. after a 62-year-old woman fell while hiking on the Pipiwai Trail in Kipahulu. Rescue 10 firefighters aboard Air 1 located the woman and her hiking party, packaged her for transport and hoisted her into the helicopter. US military identifies 2 soldiers killed in Iranian attack on Jordan as from Texas and Hawaii

WASHINGTON — The U.S. military on Monday identified two soldiers killed in action last week as part of the war with Iran. The Defense Department said in a statement that 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan, 25, of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, and Pvt. Isabella Gonzales, 19, of Carrollton, Texas, were killed in Jordan, where they were supporting a U.S. mission against the Islamic State group. Waiehu golf course play altered Aug. 4-14

Play at Waiehu Municipal Golf Course will be altered Aug. 4-14 because of a delay in the delivery of material needed for a new pond liner, according to the Maui County Department of Parks and Recreation. During that time, golfers will play the back nine twice while the front nine is closed. Work on the pond liner is still expected to be completed by the end of August. Regular irrigation has resumed to maintain course playability and watering.
