Haleakala National Park to reopen Summit Visitor Center

The Haleakala Visitor Center at 10,000 feet elevation will reopen at 8 a.m. May 21. The national park’s visitor center at the summit of Haleakala was closed for repairs and improvements to the building in February. The visitor’s center will reopen with temporary exhibits and store merchandise.

Phone scams target nurses and medical professionals statewide

The Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs is warning medical professionals, particularly nurses, about a phone scam in which fraudsters impersonate state officials. Individuals posing as state officials are contacting current and former LPNs, RNs and APRNs and falsely claiming that an investigation has been opened against them. Scammers may request personal information or, in some cases, solicit wire transfers. Haiku woman dies after May 10 wreck on Honoapiilani Highway

A woman from Haiku died Sunday from injuries sustained in a traffic collision May 10 on the Honoapiilani Highway in Kihei. According to Maui police, Teresa Campisi, 55, was driving a 2015 Volkswagen Jetta south on the highway at about 9:45 p.m. May 10. According to the preliminary investigation, Campisi was approaching the intersection with North Kihei Road when the Jetta drifted left across the grass median into oncoming traffic. Maui Waena student wins Dr. King Peace Poem Award

Seventh grade student Veronna Jhen M. Santiago from Maui Waena Intermediate School has been awarded the Maui County grand prize in the 27th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Poetry Awards. Her poem was selected out of more than 520 entries from Maui public and private schools. “We’re happy to receive work of this caliber from this young Maui poet,” said awards coordinator Melinda Gohn.
