Letter: Time for political balance for life and opportunity
While political loyalty may have once been rooted in good intentions, the effects of prolonged political dominance are becoming painfully clear. It’s time for change. Not just symbolic change, but real political diversity that invites debate, fosters accountability, and leads to better outcomes for everyday residents.
Our quality of life on Maui is suffering. The cost of living continues to rise, affordable housing remains out of reach for too many working families, and critical infrastructure, especially roads, water systems and emergency preparedness, is falling behind. But beyond the basic issues, there’s a deeper challenge: Maui’s economy is far too dependent on a single industry, leaving our island vulnerable and our people without options.
We need leadership willing to prioritize economic diversification, support small businesses, and invest in creating quality employment opportunities, especially for our young people who want to stay, work and raise families here.
Tourism will always play a role in Maui’s economy, but we must do more to build on the island’s other strengths: renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, science and technology, remote work ecosystems, and the creative industries. These are not just dreams, they’re real opportunities that need vision, investment and the political will to make them happen.
The devastating fires of August 2023 exposed not only cracks in emergency response and planning, but deeper issues of government inertia, miscommunication, and misplaced priorities. Rebuilding trust in leadership requires more than committee hearings and soundbites. It demands bold action, inclusive dialogue, and a willingness to rethink the way we govern.
