Letter: Firefighter goes extra mile to return lost puppy

On Thanksgiving Day, my puppy slipped out of our yard and wandered nearly a quarter mile up busy Hāna Highway to Ku‘au Store. I didn’t realize he was missing until one of my nieces told me a fireman was at our house — with my dog in his arms. Firefighter Walsh explained that he had found Buddy at the store. Because Buddy had no tag, he took the time to figure out where he belonged and offered helpful suggestions to keep him safe and identifiable. As a West Maui resident, I find ridiculous this whole water dispute involving Maui Land and Pineapple, the state, the county and Kapalua Golf. So MLP allegedly hasn’t fixed the pipes since 2018 and blames the state? And now Earthjustice is saying the golf course has been using water that MLP has been giving them? I thought they were getting sued for not fixing the water system? It’s a mess out here. Meanwhile we’re in a drought and the county tells us to conserve. That’s not a solution. Violent crimes have a correlation with drugs and alcohol. Alcohol is involved in 40-60 percent of domestic abuse. More than half of individuals who abuse elderly parents are dependent on drugs and alcohol.
