Letter: Labor unions have power to send a strong message

As Trump continues to attempt to make this country into a dictatorship, the labor unions have power to send a strong message to the administration and the American people with a general strike. A one-day strike of union members — flight attendants, pilots, carpenters, plumbers, auto workers — would send a strong message. This is a call for America to wake up, not a call to anarchy or violence. Michael Kaipo Nye Maui Meadows

Letter: Belief that nothing exists after physical death

Perhaps the greatest want to humanity is not the result of poverty, but of spiritual ignorance. The belief is widespread that nothing exists after physical death. Unfortunately, this harmful misperception is growing. Religions are of little help, for they just repeat their obscure formulas and commands for social control. Science also offers little help. It is in no hurry to perform the scientific research that will prove the existence of the supermundane world. Nor does science point out that one who believes in non-existence will find himself in a most pitiful condition in the ...

Letter: Overdevelopment ruining Hawaii for us locals

The next time I hear someone saying affordable housing in Hawaii, I’m gonna scream. Face it people, there is no such thing in Hawaii. All this talk and overdevelopment is ruining Hawaii for us locals. They are not building homes for us; it’s for people who don’t even exist in Hawaii, making it impossible for locals to live and thrive. Not to mention that we are having water shortages in all regions of Maui. But by all means, just keep building and ruining everything. Can’t we keep some open grassland for non-building. Our infrastructure can’t handle the ...

Letter: More vegan food offered in stadiums across country

As a huge sports fan, I’ve noticed an exciting shift in stadiums across the country: more vegan food. Nationals Park offer vegan hot dogs, Yankee Stadium serves veggie sliders, sushi and more, Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena has vegan chocolate cake, and National Basketball Association arenas like Sacramento’s Golden 1 Center have vegan pizza and chick’n tenders. My favorite is the Birdland Fresh cart at Baltimore’s Camden Yards. Their all-vegan options make me feel right at home, and they prove that vegan food can be every bit as fun and satisfying as traditional stadium ...

Letter: No garbage cans, pet waste containers at Wailuku park

We have noticed that there are no garbage cans and/or pet waste containers at Wells Park in Wailuku. This is a busy park with tennis courts and ball fields, and is also used by Iao School students during weekdays. Why then are there no trash cans in the ball areas? School kids and ballfield users have to walk to the tennis courts to throw trash away and the one can by the bathroom is often overflowing. Any chance for some additional cans in the ball field/school area for school and park users to share? Pet waste bins too, please. Karin Phaneuf Wailuku

Letter: Fraud alert: Don’t fall for jury duty scam calls

Beware of scammers calling and pretending to be from the court, claiming you missed jury duty and must pay a fine. These fraudsters prey on your fear and use it to trick you into paying large fines, sometimes thousands of dollars. A friend almost got caught in this exact scam. They had details that seemed legitimate – his name, address and even a jury duty notice. They claimed he was cited $3,000 and threatened jail time if he didn’t pay immediately (cash only). The scammer even mentioned tracking him down via satellite and sending police to arrest him. Thankfully, we called ...
