Letter: In favor of moving Maui Public Works Baseyard

We were very excited when we heard the news that Mayor Richard Bissen is in favor of moving the Maui County Public Works Baseyard out of the residential zone it is now in on Kaohu Street and into a more remote location. Ever since the baseyard inherited all those garbage trucks, (shouldn’t they be with Environmental Management?) our neighborhood has become noisier, stinkier and more dangerous. Kudos to our mayor for recognizing that this old baseyard has become obsolete and that location could be wonderful for some apartments — some affordable housing. Karin Phaneuf Wailuku

Letter: Trump’s illegal actions define his presidency

No one has ever been as dangerous to this country as Donald Trump. He is merrily ignoring the law and has actively been dismantling the Constitution since day one. Few Republicans have dared to challenge him. Trump’s tariff plan is illegal. Only Congress has the power to impose tariffs. Deportations without due process are illegal. Trump’s taking millions from the Saudis for his golf tournament this past weekend is illegal under the emoluments clause of the Constitution, but he gleefully accepted their cash anyway. Last general election, 30% of the voters on Maui, or 22,621 people, voted for Trump for a variety of reasons. You may be one and I hope that you did not vote for Trump because you wanted a billionaire to destroy federal services or Social Security checks paused, or because you wanted Haleakala National Park to be even more understaffed, or because you wanted legal residents to be pulled off the street flown to a foreign country, head shaved, and held in prison indefinitely for the crime of wanting to be an American legally. This is an incredibly bad time for our legislators to accept a 35- to 48-percent pay raise. And to also not agree to meet year-round to potentially earn it. It’s crushingly disappointing that our State House and Senate legislators are not heard and seen crusading to support the reform and anti-corruption bills that die every session. President Donald Trump told the truth (for once), when he exclaimed that once elected, he would act as a dictator. He has shown that he does not care about promoting democracy, only about power: corporate, presidential, national. He is now defying federal judges’ orders.
