Presidential campaign opinion challenged

In response to the recent letter about an editorial ran in The Maui News: Are you joking? The writer seems to think the editorial is discredited because of obscurity, but then states, “Major history-political wizards agree that Biden is one of our better presidents.” Major history-political wizards? Exactly who is the writer referring to? She goes on with, “Maybe by smearing a bunch of language together, Mr. Graham seeks to make nonsense out of what is clearly sensible, critical thinking on developing policies.” Seriously? No one is better at streaming together ...

Letter: For Crying Out Loud

Did we fail to hear the cries of ruin from previous west Maui fires? Did we forget what happened one year ago? Did we intentionally ignore the destruction even though evidence remains to be seen? What about toxicity? Let’s cover it up, that’ll make it safe. Flags half staff. Is that it? Wooden crosses on the side of a freeway? Are we so heartless that we neglect to build a permanent memorial for families to honor their loved ones. Are we in a rush to sweep everything under the rug in order to bring life back to normal? Who’s normal? If that is the case then we are about to let ...

Letter: How about opinion by folks other than pundits?

How about running opinion by those who include more than social media handles requiring research only perhaps allowing a response? In fact, how about opinion by folks other than bloggers and podcasters along with someone denoting himself editor of an apparently online source under four years old? The Guardian editorial in The Maui News, on the other hand, was incisive with cogent thinking despite no locale appearing for the Guardian. Tim Graham, editor of a blog, claiming a role as research guru at a conservative center with no given address, seems to think Vice President Kamala ...

Letter: Visitors annoyed, sharing displeasure with world

Our tourist-dependent economy is fizzling as tourists hit their tipping point. Rather than an aloha welcome, Hawaii is nickel and diming our chief economic engine. Tourists have noted Hawaii’s haughtiness with our “stick it to ‘em” attitude. Entrance to state parks and beaches can have a daily family cost of $30 plus a $1.78 order processing fee. Hawaii’s nearly 18 percent accommodation taxes are among the highest anywhere. Add on resort and parking fees, restaurant surcharges, room cleaning and registration fees, and you have our vital visitors annoyed and, via ...

Letter: OK to take huge numbers of reef fish for aquariums?

Now that our Hawaii Supreme Court has decided that it is ok to take huge numbers of small fish from our reefs so they can be sold to the aquarium trade and shipped worldwide, it is up to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources to issue permits for the decimation of our small reef fish populations. Is anyone paying attention to this? Does DLNR think this is what we need or want? Do our reefs exist for the benefit of aquariums around the world? Our corals and fish are struggling to survive as it is. I’ve sat on beaches and heard tourists comment on the lack of fish as ...

Letter: Democrats didn’t encourage primary election process

Kamala Harris is an appointed candidate. She is not elected. The Marxists, led by Barack Obama, selected her because she is a Marxist. If you say she is not a Marxist, let us see her website with policies etc. Obama and the Marxists did not encourage a primary election process. She will not debate on Fox. She will not give interviews. She will not hold a news conference and answer questions. Kamala Harris’s father is a Marxist professor. The election is between an elected candidate, Donald Trump elected by the people, and an appointed Marxist candidate who has not ...
