Should have put toxins in shipping containers

How sad and unfortunate that our government is choosing lives over money. The American government still giving away billions of dollars to foreign countries while the American Hawaiian people are still suffering from the fires and the aftermath. This hurried nonsense of do it or lose the money is ridiculous. I do understand the need for people to get back to their homes, but at what risk to the overall population? The Federal Emergency Management Agency and all the government crews should have been putting the toxins in shipping containers from the beginning. Like my past ...

Israel’s Netanyahu aims for US war with Iran

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has always blocked a two-state solution, confirming the illusion that American Jewish influence is that powerful. President Joe Biden shot himself in the foot, with his ironclad support and the trust put into Netanyahu. He alienated key supporters, with his less than honest “brokerage” of support for Israel. That collaboration with the US, is now in jeopardy. No American politician or personality, for that matter, dare commit political suicide, in legitimately criticizing Israel. It only reinforces those real bigots, white supremacists, ...

Far-right propaganda disservice to readers

I respect and admire The Maui News for presenting a variety of views. But presenting far-right propaganda by Laura Hollis (Jan. 19 opinion) does your readers a disservice. County’s toxic waste plan flawed from beginning?

I happened to be in an elevator at my hotel with some engineers who specialize in toxic substances, and they expressed their belief that the proposed plan by Mayor Richard Bissen for storing waste from the Lahaina fire should never have been considered. They felt it was flawed from the very beginning. I am curious to know who was responsible for coming up with such a misguided idea. There were many good organizations with much better solutions, which fell on deaf ears. There is evidence that the Environmental Protection Agency, when bringing toxic lead batteries and the first ...

Consciousness of solitude blessing for finding way

Many years ago, I withdrew into the proverbial pathless forest. It had to be pathless, otherwise it would not have been my path to myself. Little did I know that the brush hid an abandoned cabin and that I would stay there for ten years. Because I was careful to never come and go, never create a new path. No unexpected guest arrived at my cabin for more than 3,600 days and nights. Brush, new trees beginning their growth to the towering mighty redwood crowns, ferns and downed ancient redwoods made it impossible to see either my path or my place. In fact, only after I acquired a ...

Make ability, talent, safety priority or deaths likely

The recent near disaster onboard the Alaska Airlines plane suggests, once again, that whether it is in engineering, medicine or aviation, when DEI (Diversity-Equity-Inclusion) becomes a priority over ability, talent and safety, people are much more likely to die. Randolph Coon Kula
