WAILUKU — In the end, when everything was finally decided, Gundi Dancil broke out his Christmas present to celebrate.

The King Kekaulike High School girls soccer coach pulled a small, portable speaker out of his bag and cued up the song “Bring Sally Up” to commemorate the first back-to-back Maui Interscholastic League girls soccer titles in school history.

That Na Alii were celebrating to a song they use for push-ups and squats was fitting. This had been an all-out battle Wednesday night at War Memorial Stadium.

Sheylyn Ranis scored the championship golden goal in the 96th minute to give King Kekaulike a 2-1 victory over Kamehameha Maui and a second straight MIL title.

“Anytime we play, like I say, the top, we’re going to have a battle,” Dancil said. “Today, when I first talked to (Kamehameha) coach (Brandon Kotter), I said, ‘Let’s make this game exciting.’ And it was an exciting game all the way to the end.

“Hat’s off to their players, they rode us, brought it to us. They scored first, so I thank the ladies for stepping up and getting the goal for us.”

King Kekaulike (8-1-2) will draw a first-round bye and begin play in the quarterfinals next Thursday in The Queen’s Medical Girls State Championships at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex on Oahu.

Kamehameha Maui (7-2-2), which was seeking its first MIL girls crown since 2014, will host a first-round match on Monday at Kanaiaupuni Stadium.

“I know they’ll do good against the Oahu team that is coming over,” Dancil said of the Warriors.

Teani Arakawa assisted on both goals for Na Alii, including a rocket shot off the post that rebounded to Ranis to tap in.

“She was taking it down and she was going against one of the girls head on head — I thought she was going to shoot it from right in the corner, but it hit off the post and came right to me,” said Ranis, a junior midfielder. “Nice left-foot shot right into the corner.”

It marked the first time that Na Alii had led against the Warriors in three matches this season. In 256 minutes against each other, the two teams were tied for 249 minutes unofficially — the first match ended 0-0 and the last match on Saturday night ended 1-1.

On Wednesday, Kamehameha Maui scored first when Mackenzie Ventura put in a pretty goal that hit the right goalpost and bounced in. Ventura’s goal came in the 71st minute after King Kekaulike goalkeeper Kiralynn Pu snuffed a run by Teija Tuitele.

King Kekaulike’s Jaycie-Ann Valoroso scored on a header off a corner kick by Arakawa five minutes later to send the match to extra time.

“It feels so great, I feel like we had to work very hard for it,” Arakawa said. “I was so happy. It was very close, they would score first and then we’d come back. It just feels good to finally get it done.”

A total of four seniors took part in the championship playoff: Nyasia Martinez for King Kekaulike; and Kaitlyn Randall, Shea Watanabe and Kiana Over for Kamehameha Maui.

“Both teams are young, but it seemed like our girls picked it up after that goal from Jaycie,” Dancil said. “I’m thinking both coaches are relieved that it didn’t go that far (to penalty kicks), but we prepared for that because of the history that we have with each other.”

Kotter tipped his cap to the champions.

“It is tough, but we’re not going to take anything away from King Kekaulike, they came to play, they wanted it, they got it, and they ended up winning it, so congratulations to them,” Kotter said. “They did a heck of a job, they brought it today, they work hard, and you know, they came away with the win and they deserved it.”

Kotter said that his team has four injured starters, but they will be ready to play Monday.

“We didn’t want to have to worry about playing that Monday match, but we’re going to play who we’ve got and we’re going to do what we’ve got to do,” he said.
