Impromptu track meet
MIL athletes benefit from last-minute competition Tuesday
KAHULUI — King Kekaulike High School’s Isabella Dillon will gladly take all the chances she can get to race this season, even at a last- second track and field meet held on a Tuesday.
Due to a delay in construction of the War Memorial Stadium parking lot, teams were given an opportunity to compete at a another limited-events Maui Interscholastic League meet earlier this week at the Yamamoto Track and Field Facility.
Lahainaluna and Kamehameha Maui did not participate Tuesday.
But Fillon, a junior sprinter for Na Alii, took full advantage of MIL meet No. 2, winning both the 100- and 200-meter races with times of 12.97 seconds and 27.00 seconds, respectively.
“It feels good, I feel pretty excited to actually be racing again,” Dillon said after a close finish in the 200 with Seabury Hall’s Ruby Kessler. “I was actually excited (to hear about Tuesday’s track meet) because I didn’t get to run at the last meet, so I was pretty excited to get to run an actual race.”
Running all the races she can will help to “keep my ranking up for states and just to get the best times I can.”
King Kekaulike’s William Yudis also took home gold in the boys 100 (11.47) and 200 (23.45), while Ansel Newman added another win in the 3,000 (9:33.18) for Na Alii.
While it’s still early in the season, head coach Jesse Henderson said that he is happy with how the team looks so far.
“We’ve got a fantastic group, they’re young,” Henderson said. “I’ve been doing this 15 years now with Kekaulike. We’ve had talent every year but this is the deepest we’ve ever been, and yeah, thrilled is a major understatement. Just the quality of the kids, and they work hard. As a coach, I can’t ask for anymore than that.”
When Henderson heard about the delay in construction and the idea for another limit-events meet, his initial reaction was “more meets the better.”
“It wasn’t an ideal planning situation but as long as our kids get to run, it’s all good,” he said. “I wish we had more events, but I’ll take what we can get. This season is not ideal as far as meets go, but as long as the kids are running, I’m good.
“The MIL is going to be very competitive, there’s talent all the way around, so it’s going to be fun,” he added. “It’s going to be interesting to see who ends up where.”
The Bears owned the boys field events this week with Isaiah Richards placing first in the long (18-51/2) and triple jumps (39-101/2), and Chazz Copa at the high jump (5-10). John Bacos (39-8) won the shot put and Akulia Kolomatangi (137-3) the discus throw.
In the girls field competition, Maui Prep’s Sydney Synder jumped 5-1 in the high jump for gold, and Baldwin’s Tianna Powell continued her reign at the pole vault pit with an 11-6.
The boys 800 debuted this season with Maui High’s cross country standouts Hunter Shields (2:04.28), Damon Wakefield (2:04.33), and Adam Hakola (2:07.85) finishing 1-2-3. The final stretch was a sprint off between Wakefield and Shields, who took the outside lanes for the 0.05-second win.
Hakola bounced back and ran for silver shortly after in the 3,000.
The Sabers topped off the night by winning the 1600 relay in 3:35.65, followed by Seabury (3:42.30) and King Kekaulike (3:43.81).
“They’re looking good, they’re where we want them right now, you know, obviously it’s too early in the season so we don’t want them to peak now. We still got eight weeks to go,” Maui high coach Belden Bautista said. “I was excited about tonight, as you know, with the shortened season, it’s great having a track meet. … So we were excited. Even if it was a short notice, we were going to run no matter what.”
This season, Hawaii High School Athletic Association is only accepting the top 24 athletes in each event, rather than the athlete qualifying per state standard time or mark as done in previous years.
The top 24 can certainly shift around all season until the last week. Especially with competitive leagues like the Oahu Interscholastic Association and the Interscholastic League of Honolulu having a meet on the final weekend before the state championship.
“Well if you’re not in the top 24 you shouldn’t be going to states to begin with, you know what I mean, that’s my thought,” Bautista said. “My boys, they know where they stand, so they got to keep working every week. If you’re not in the top 16, you are in jeopardy of losing a spot once the championship season comes around, and the ILH and the OIA, but I think if you’re in the top 15-16, you’re pretty safe.”
The first full MIL track meet is set for March 27 at King Kekaulike Stadium, but in the meantime, a handful of MIL runners and jumpers are planning to travel off-island to compete and increase their chances of staying in the top rankings, such as at the Menehune Invitational Track Meet or the Ruby Tuesday Hawaii Invitational.
“It felt really good being like the season opener, I wanted to go out strong and see how much I can progress this year,” said Seabury sophomore Kaylee Volner after winning the girls 3,000 in 11:12.86. “I think having this meet is pretty important because it gives you a feel for the season and our next race isn’t for like two-three weeks.”
The Spartans A team girls finished the meet with a win in the 1600 relay (4:17.83) just ahead of the King Kekaulike A team (4:21.20).
With this year’s schedule changes, “we don’t have that much time to get our times going, and to be top 24 in the state, so it’s a nice opener to see where we’re all at — us compared to all the other leagues, too,” Volner said.
