Overview

Both teams will be looking for crucial momentum going into the second round of play that begins next week. The Sabers drew votes in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser state top-10 poll last week after their 40-0 win over Baldwin. Na Alii played a controlled scrimmage against Molokai last week on their bye week.

Sabers at a glance

Maui High is looking for a rare three-win round. Quarterback Joe Cariaga had two touchdown passes last week. The Sabers also scored on a fumble return, a kickoff return and an interception return, the first two by Zach Dando.

Na Alii at a glance

King Kekaulike scored a season-high 27 points in its last official game when sophomore QB Kalelepono Wong entered the game off the bench against Kamehameha Maui. Wong scored on two short runs and threw two TD passes.

Quotable

“Offensively I think we did OK, we still are missing some assignments. Obviously defensively we’ve got a lot of things to work on. … If we can wrap up those mistakes, I think we’ll have a better chance.”

— Tyson Valle, King Kekaulike head coach after a loss to Kamehameha Maui

Kamehameha Maui vs. Baldwin

Saturday, War Memorial Stadium, 6 p.m.

Overview

Both of these teams hope it’s bounce-back week after lopsided losses last week. This will be a battle of two teams that like to pass the football, with QBs Makana Kamaka-Brayce of Kamehameha Maui and Logan Randall of Baldwin. Each defense surrendered more than 20 first downs last week.

Warriors at a glance

Kamaka-Brayce is the leading passer in the MIL and has weapons outside in Kahoa Abreu, Dylan Schnitzer, Po’okela Aiu and Kainoa Carpenter. Ho’ohenomauloa Stone-Han and McKay Pali lead the ground game.

Bears at a glance

Ezra Laga and Jonathan Bacos are key to the Bears on both sides of the ball, as linebackers on defense and running backs on offense. Nathen Foster, Jordan Yoro and Kahekili Eleneke are the main receivers.

Quotable

“Any loss we tell our coaches, our players, ‘We have one day to do what we have to do.’ The next day at practice we have to come out and focus on our next opponent.”

— Pohai Lee, Baldwin head coach after a loss to Maui High last week
