The Maui News
The first Maui Interscholastic League surf contest transformed into a surfboard paddling race as Kahului Harbor did not yield any contestable waves at the Jetty surfbreak.
Instead of surfing in heats, competitors paddled on identical 9-foot longboards in their heats. The prone paddlers started from inside the buoy at the boat ramp and paddled upwind around a mark and then downwind to the finish. Some of the surfers were able to catch the occasional swells coming in on the 500-yard course.
Seabury Hall edged Maui Prep, 52-51, to win the boys competition. Gabe Girardin led the Spartans with a win.
Maui Prep had two winners, Noah Caiserman and Preston Armstrong.
Baldwin won the girls competition over Haleakala Waldorf, 57-40. The Bears had three winners: Maile Kaaihue, Jenna Boggs and Liana Kaaihue.
The next MIL surf meet is set for March 26 at D.T. Fleming Beach Park in Napili.
