Seabury Hall paddlers win state silver, bronze

The Maui Interscholastic League champion Seabury Hall canoe paddling team brought home silver and bronze medals from the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA State Championships held Saturday at Keehi Lagoon in Honolulu.
The Spartans’ crew of Jake Devane, Caleb Proctor, Maka Carey, Sig Konohia, Rio Imperato and Lei’ohu Turley finished second in the mixed final behind Punahou on the half-mile course with a time of 3 minutes, 50.94 seconds. The Buff ‘n Blue won in 3:44.22.
King Kekaulike placed fourth in the race in 3:59.39. Na Alii’s mixed crew was the only MIL squad other than the Spartans to make any of the three state finals.
The Seabury boys earned a bronze medal with a time of 3:45.38, finishing behind Punahou (3:34.56) and Iolani (3:42.80).
In the girls final, the Spartans finished fourth with a time of 4:23.04. Buff ‘n Blue won in 4:13.70, in front of Mid-Pacific (4:18.37) and Kamehameha Kapalama (4:20.58).
After advancing through the girls preliminary races Saturday morning, King Kekaulike and Lahainaluna were both disqualified in the semifinals.
Kamehameha Maui competed in the semifinals in the boys division but did not qualify for finals.
