Farmers win with combine no-no, advance to D-II final
WAILUKU — Reyn Raguindin and Saven Kaahanui combined on a five-inning no-hitter to lead Molokai High School to a 12-2 win over Hana in a semifinal matchup in the Maui Interscholastic League Division II baseball tournament on Thursday at Maehara Stadium.
The Farmers improved to 7-0 as they move into the tournament final today, while the Dragons saw their season end at 0-7.
Raguindin got the victory with three innings of work, allowing both runs, walking five and striking out two. Kaahanui struck out all six batters he faced.
“We had a couple injuries in the game, the pitchers threw well enough to win,” Molokai coach Keahi Rawlins said. “My relief came in, Saven, and kind of just shut the door and let us get going offensively.
“We hit the ball, put some balls in play enough to manufacture some runs. Did our usual get the runners on and get them moving around the bases. Overall proud of the boys, but we have a lot to clean up on.”
Gavin Ainoa led the Molokai hitting attack with a 2-for-2 day at the plate –he scored three times.
The Dragons committed eight errors, the Farmers one.
The Farmers can clinch the MIL’s only state tournament berth with a win in today’s tournament final against Seabury Hall tonight at 5:30 p.m. or a winner-take-all championship game on Saturday.
The Spartans (5-2) outlasted Lanai 18-16 in a 3 1/2-hour second semifinal.
Liam Mabbutt was 3 for 3 with four runs scored, five RBIs and two doubles for the Spartans, while Kolten Waikiki was 4 for 4 with four RBIs and a double.
Johnny Baltero and Aiden Hough each had three hits for the Pine Lads, whose season ended at 2-5.
