KAHULUI — With the methodical, business-like approach that has been its hallmark for many years, Seabury Hall clinched all three Maui Interscholastic League paddling titles with convincing wins in each division on Saturday at Kahului Harbor.

The Spartans have won all nine races this season in the first three regattas — the boys, girls and mixed divisions to clinch the overall league crown in each. It is the fourth straight season Seabury crews have swept the MIL paddling titles.

On Saturday, they left no doubt on who the power school in MIL paddling is with two league meets remaining on the schedule before the state regatta on Feb. 10.

The Seabury Hall girls crew of Jasmine Gorman, Zella Kofron, Makalani Carey, Makena Ruegsegger, Isabelle Brown and Lei’ohu Turley won their half-mile final in 4 minutes, 24.87 seconds, more than 14 seconds in front of second-place Kamehameha Maui.

The Seabury Hall boys crew — Cody Frampton, Sig Konohia, Rhys Maier, Jake Brocklehurst, John Kaahui and Max Moquin — won their final in 3:42.54, more than 10 seconds in front of second-place King Kekaulike.

The Spartans mixed six of Konohia, Brocklehurst, Brown, Carey, Gorman and Moquin won their final in 3:59.35, more than nine seconds in front of KSM.

Now the challenge is to stay sharp with two MIL regattas to tune up for the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA state championship at Hilo Bay in three weeks.

“I think we just all have to keep encouraging each other to just be better,” said Gorman, a junior. “We may have won MILs, but to just keep going, to keep pushing ourselves to always think of the overall goal of trying to win a state championship.”

Last season, Seabury Hall finished third in the girls and boys divisions at state before claiming the runner-up trophy in the mixed race.

Gorman said those results are still on their minds.

“We were just so close last year,” Gorman said. “It kind of hurts a little bit to think that we were almost there, but I think this year our crews are even stronger, even better. And I think that we definitely have a really good shot this year and I think that’s going to really push us.”

Frampton is a senior who was a part of the boys and mixed crews last season. Like Gorman, he is a team captain.

“We just have to keep pushing together, we’ve got to work as a team, we all know, last year we saw all of our competition at states, all the big Oahu schools,” Frampton said. “They have some big guys over there, big girls, too — they could be considered a little scary, but we know that.

“We just have to keep each other humble in practice, keep working hard, can’t ease up.”

Seabury Hall coach Paul Luuwai has led the Spartans to 34 MIL canoe division titles since 2010. He has also led them to five state titles, but none since winning the mixed state title in 2018.

He also led King Kekaulike to 12 MIL titles and the 2006 state mixed crown. The Spartans have won 10 of the last 14 girls MIL crowns, 11 of the last 14 boys MIL titles, including nine in a row, and 13 of the last 14 mixed championships.

“Three weeks away,” Luuwai said of the state regatta. “It all goes back to our goals, right? Our goal was to try to win the MIL championships, that was our first goal. Our next goal and our top goal is to compete for a state championship and then, of course, to improve is another goal and to learn culture and to have a sense of family, pride and tradition at our school.

“We’re just trying to check the boxes on all of our goals. We checked the first boxes, now on to the next ones.”
