Kamehameha Maui starts strong on gridiron

Coming off a win last weekend against Baldwin, Kamehameha Maui’s football team is looking forward to playing against Maui High at 7 p.m. Saturday at King Kekaulike High Stadium.

Kamehameha Maui coach Ulima Afoa said he was pleased with his team’s balanced offense on the ground and in the air against Baldwin last week.

Kamehameha rusher Zedekaiah Campbell ran for 159 yards and three touchdowns to help defeat Baldwin 28-21.

Afoa said Campbell, a senior, is a very talented and athletic running back who’s difficult to tackle and worth an evaluation by college football scouts.

“I think he’s worthy of an opportunity,” said Afoa, who has coached at the college level. “It would be good for people to evaluate him. He can bring something to the table.”

In the Baldwin win, Kamehameha Maui’s quarterback Kekoa Keau-Davis passed for 156 yards and a touchdown.

Afoa said Keau-Davis, a sophomore, is playing his first year in varsity and is a talented young player.

“He is the quarterback of the future here,” Afoa said.

In other Maui Interscholastic League action, King Kekaulike plays against Lahainaluna High School at 7 p.m. Friday at Lahainaluna field.

Kekaulike defeated Maui High 41-20 last week.

Kekaulike quarterback Kingston Goliday passed for 174 yards and three touchdowns to help lead the Division II King Kekaulike football team to victory over Maui High, which plays in Division I.

Kekaulike rushers Wayne Kahula and Kainoa Kuailani ran for 127 and 64 yards, respectively, with each scoring a touchdown.

Kekaulike defensive player Kamalei Akinaka recovered a fumble in the end zone in the second quarter.

In eight-player football on the Valley Isle last weekend, Seabury Hall defeated Lanai High School 13-0. Seabury Hall scored all of its points in the second quarter with Carson Hollifield completing TD passes to Peter Ruegsegger from 18 yards and 34 yards out.

Starting at $4.62/week.
