Warriors upend reigning girls volleyball champ in dominant win

Unlike last year, the Baldwin Bears girls volleyball team will not go undefeated this year.
The Bears defeated Kamehameha 25-18, 25-8, 25-12 in last year’s Maui Interscholastic League championship to win their fourth-straight MIL title and cap off a 13-0 regular season.
On Tuesday, Kamehameha Maui took its revenge, beating the defending champs 25-17, 25-20 and 25-23 in straight sets.
KS-Maui coach Sienna Davis said her team was confident coming in, as Baldwin had graduated many of the players from last year’s powerhouse squad.
“They are definitely in a rebuilding year, but they came out strong,” Davis said. “But we took the momentum, and it felt great to win. But it’s how we win that’s important — that we’re having fun.”
Davis said her team will be flying to Hilo on Thursday to take part in the 28-team Hawaii Island Labor Day Classic.
Baldwin will host Lahainalina tonight while KS-Maui plays at King Kekaulike on Tuesday.
Maui Prep was the big winner in Division II MIL girls volleyball Friday, defeating Hana 25-16, 25-13,16-25, 25-19 on the first day of the Ka Maka Ihe Invitational hosted by Seabury Hall and KS-Maui on Aug. 21-22.
In Division I action, KS-Hawaii took first, followed by KS-Maui and King Kekaulike, which placed third.
In other action, Maui High lost to King Kekaulike on Tuesday in three sets, but came back home Thursday to beat Lahianiluna 25-9, 25-11, 25-23. Next up for the Sabers is Baldwin on Sept. 2.
KS-M Aug. 19 defeated Lahainaluna 25-8, 25-10 and 25-19. KS-M plays next at Baldwin Aug. 26.
The Kulanihakoi Rays defeated Kihei Charter at home Wednesday in straight sets to improve to 2-0 on the year. The Rays are scheduled to face off at home against Haleakala Waldorf on Friday.
The standings as of Wednesday in MIL Division 1 have KS-Maui at 3-0, King Kekaulike at 2-0, Maui High at 1-1 and Baldwin at 0-1.
In Division II, Maui Prep is 3-0, followed by Kulanihakoi (2-0), Seabury Hall (1-0), Lahainaluna (0-2) Hana (X-X), Haleakala Waldorf (0-2) and Kihei Charter (0-1).
