Appointments taken for Novavax vaccine

The state Department of Health has announced scheduling opportunities for the COVID-19 vaccine manufactured by Novavax.  Novavax is a two-dose primary series vaccine for individuals 18 and older. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends administering the second dose three to eight weeks after the first.  Novavax is a protein subunit vaccine, which includes harmless proteins of the COVID-19 virus that trigger an immune response, according to a news release from the DOH. COVID cases at jail drop to 9

The number of active COVID-19 cases dropped to nine at the Maui Community Correctional Center in the week that ended Tuesday, the Department of Public Safety reported. Three inmates tested positive, 144 were negative and 50 inmates recovered from COVID during the period. No staff COVID cases were reported at the Wailuku jail. The number of cases declined from 56 active inmate cases reported in the week ending Aug. 2.

Health centers get federal funding

Four community health centers in Maui County will receive $65,500 each “to advance health equity through better data collection and reporting,” the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced Monday. The department, through the Health Resources and Services Administration, awarded $786,000 in American Rescue Plan funding to 12 community health centers in Hawaii.
