Updated 11:24 p.m.: Uncounted Maui County ballots could swing tight County Council races

With a number of tight races getting down to the wire, there remained nearly 3,000 votes to count in Maui County, as of shortly before 11 p.m., according to Deputy County Clerk Josiah Nishita. The breakdown of those votes was: approximately 2,500 paper ballots from the Haiku Community Center; 300 late mail dropoffs; and 170 duplicated ballots, Nishita said. The Maui County Clerk's Office contacted candidates to inform them that there still were uncounted ballots, he said. "We didn't want anybody to think it's done or called," he said. Atay wins Wailuku council seat in come-from-behind victory

After nearly 3,000 votes were counted late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning, natural farm alchemist Alika Atay came from behind to defeat former Maui County Council Member Dain Kane for the Wailuku-Waihee-Waikapu council residency seat, according to general election results posted at 5:18 a.m. Kane led from the first printout, which had him ahead of Atay by 1,781 votes after only absentee mail-in and walk-in ballots were counted and reported. Meanwhile, Tuesday night leaders in county council races maintained their leads and held on to win seats. Vote tallies show ...

This is in keeping with past trends of significant increases in general election voting, which decides who will be president, governor and mayor and — in 2014 — whether the highly charged genetically modified organism referendum would pass. The totals also reflect a voting trend ...

Voter turnout up in Central, South and East Maui

Maui voters turned out in greater numbers Tuesday, at least compared with anemic results during the Aug. 13 primary election, according to reports from polls at the Haiku Community Center, Maui High School, Kihei Community Center and Kihei Elementary School. In spite of a broken machine, the Haiku precinct drew an “unbelievable” turnout, officials said. “It's huge. It's unprecedented,” Gregory Unabia said Tuesday afternoon. Unabia has been a Maui voter assistance official for over a decade. “Today is really good,” said Dawn DeRego, precinct ...
