The Jewish Congregation of Maui will observe Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Memorial Day, at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Beit Shalom Synagogue, 634 Alulike St. in Kihei. On Yom Hashoah, Jews remember and recognize the 6 million men, women and children whose lives were tragically stolen by the Nazis in a plan to rid the world of Jews. Participants will light six candles to represent the murdered Jews; recount the tales of victims and survivors; read stories of heroism, hope and miracles; recite poetry written by children in the ghetto; and pray for the elevation of the victims’ souls. Hanamatsuri set in Wailuku The Maui Hanamatsuri Association will hold its annual Hanamatsuri event Sunday at the Velma McWayne Santos Community Center in Wailuku. The day’s events will begin with a 9 a.m. service. Hanamatsuri, commemorating the birth of Shakyamuni Buddha 2,500 years ago, is one of the most celebrated observances in the Buddhist traditions.
