A memorial bell for five young men who died 95 years ago on a hiking trip to Haleakala will be rededicated at 9 a.m. Sunday at Makawao Hongwanji temple. A bell from Japan was purchased in memory of the young men. The blessing will be officiated by the Rev. William Masuda. The Jewish Congregation of Maui will celebrate the festival of Purim at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Beit Shalom Synagogue in Kihei. Members of the public are welcome. Purim celebrates the Jewish people surviving the genocidal plans of the Persian tyrant Haman, who wished to annihilate all the Jews of Persia in its 127 provinces. To honor the memory of the persecuted Persian Jews, Jews around the world refrain from food and drink on the day leading up to the celebration. Ministry school announces class The Rev. John Chasteen from Oklahoma City, Okla., will be teaching a class titled “Communication Principles, Making Connections” at the Transformation School of Ministry from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Transformation School of Ministry’s introductory class is free, then $50 a semester for audit students and $150 for degree students. The Jewish Congregation of Maui invites the community to celebrate the Jewish New Year of the Trees, also known as Tu B’Shvat, on Sunday. Participants will meet at 10 a.m. at the Haiku Community Center before heading to the farm of Tracy Stice. In addition to planting trees, attendees will be able to pick fruit from laden trees to either keep or donate to the Maui Food Bank and other outlets that feed the hungry.
