Priest from Nepal to speak Monday The Rev. Sonam Wangdi Bhutia, head priest of the Kathmandu Hongwanji in Nepal, will speak from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the Kahului Hongwanji Mission as part of the Buddhist Study Center’s 2017 Summer Session titled “Jodo Shinshu in the Land of Shakyamuni.” Bhutia will share his journey of being raised as a monk at 3 years old to the highest ranks in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. There will be the first sign-up for the special Holy Land Pilgrimage celebrating Israel’s 70th birthday at noon Saturday at Faith in Jesus Church in Wailuku. The trip is set for April 3-20. The cost of approximately $5,000 includes airfare from Maui to Tel Aviv via San Francisco, hotels, food, air-conditioned buses and guided tours with special guides, entrance fees, taxes and tips. Convention set at MACC

The Bible’s message of hope is the focus of this year’s “Don’t Give Up” convention July 7-9 at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. The program, presented by Jehovah’s Witnesses, begins at 9:20 a.m. each day. See a complete program schedule and videos about the convention at www.jw.org. Israel expert to speak Sunday John W. Swails III, a professor at Oral Roberts University, will speak at the Faith in Jesus Church in Wailuku at the 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. services Sunday. Swails is a professor of history and director of the Center for the Israel and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma. He is a consultant for many ministries who are involved with organizations that minister for Israel.
