Backpack blessing is Sunday

Makawao Union Church will hold its annual "Blessing of the Backpacks" during its 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service.The blessing "marks the beginning of the new school year and reminds our children and youth of God's care and protection as they continue their journey in education," an announcement said.The church also will recognize teachers, "honoring their ministry in educating our young people."Makawao Union Church is an interdenominational community church located at 1445 Baldwin Ave., two miles mauka from the Hana Highway. The 11 English Maui and Lanai congregations of Jehovah's Witnesses will hold their "God's Word is Truth" District Convention July 5 through 7 in the Maui Arts & Cultural Center's Castle and McCoy theaters, according to an announcement.The Witnesses launched this series of conventions in the United States during May and will continue the programs worldwide through the end of December.
