Flight from drug court results in prison term
WAILUKU — A man who fled from the Maui Drug Court program was sentenced Tuesday to a 10-year prison term.
Jessey Parker, 41, was found guilty of first-degree burglary, second-degree theft, fourth-degree criminal property damage and possession of burglar’s tools after he agreed to end his participation in the program offering intensive drug treatment and supervision as an alternative to prison.
Parker was 36 when he moved to Hawaii after having several felony convictions in Washington state, said Deputy Prosecutor Kenton Werk.
On Maui, Parker had been sentenced to five years’ probation for felony crimes when he was arrested for new felony offenses, Werk said. After being admitted into Drug Court in 2016, Parker spent a little over a year in the program, “then absconded to the state of Washington,” Werk said.
He said Parker was arrested for new charges there before being extradited back to Maui this year.
The prison sentence for Parker was warranted “based on his lengthy record,” Werk said.
In imposing the sentence, 2nd Circuit Judge Joseph Cardoza noted that Parker has an extensive criminal record.
“That’s extremely unfortunate,” Cardoza told Parker. “You’re a person of tremendous potential, great intellect. You really shouldn’t be wearing orange. You should be wearing a suit and improving the lives of those around you.”
The judge said Parker could still do that.
“It doesn’t have to be this way,” Cardoza said. “You really should have a college degree. There’s no reason you don’t have that, other than choices you’ve made.
“There’s only one person keeping you from achieving that. You get to see that person in the mirror.”
In three other criminal cases from 2012, Parker was resentenced to prison and jail terms for four counts of second-degree burglary, three counts of attempted second-degree theft, second-degree theft, four counts of second-degree criminal property damage, possession of burglar’s tools and third-degree criminal property damage.
He is serving all prison terms at the same time.
